Apple Mail Setup for Faculty/Staff
Requirements:
- Apple's Mail application version 1.3 or higher
IMAP Apple Mail Setup
Features:
- Messages will remain on the server and when deleted they are removed from both Mail and the server.
- You will have access to Cabinet folders on GroupWise server.
Instructions:
- Launch Mail
- From the Mail menu select Preferences.
- Then click on the Accounts icon at the top:
- Tab Dialog Box: Account Information Tab
- At the lower left of the Dialog Box there is a '+' and a '-' button for adding or removing accounts. Press the '+' to create a new account
- Fill in the blanks as follows:
- Account Type: Select IMAP from the dropdown list
- Description: Type GVSU IMAP or GroupWise IMAP
- Email address: Type your address (i.e. doej@gvsu.edu)
- Full Name: Type your name in the box (i.e. John Doe)
- Incoming Mail Server: Type imap.gwise.gvsu.edu in the text box
- User name: Must be exact username that is in GroupWise
- Password: Type in your GroupWise password
- Outgoing Mail Server : Type smtp.gwise.gvsu.edu in the text box
- Click on the Server Settings button:
- Dialog Box: SMTP Server Settings
- Leave the Outgoing Mail Server text as smtp.gwise.gvsu.edu
- At the Authentication pop up menu change from 'None' to 'Password'
- User name: Must be exact username that is in GroupWise
- Password: Type in your GroupWise password
- Click OK to save.
- Close the Preferences window and Save changes when asked.
Tab Dialog Box: Special Mailboxes tab
There are three options here that determine when messages on the server can be removed. By Default Sent and Junk messages are set to Never be automatically removed, while Deleted messages are removed from the server after One Week
Remember: once a message is removed, it may show in Mail but it is not on the GroupWise Server any more
Tab Dialog Box: Advanced tab
By default the top three options are selected, Under the third option that says Remove copy from server after retrieving a message there is a pop up menu that indicates when the messages are to be removed from the server. The default is one week. You can change this to what you want
Remember: once a message is removed, it may show in Mail but it is not on the GroupWise Server any more
Mail will start to download your messages and depending on how much mail you have and the internet connection type you have (dialup, or high speed internet) this could take from 15 minutes to over 1 hour.
POP Apple Mail Setup
Features:
- At the setup of the account, you have the option of either getting copies of new email messages (leaves messages on server) or retrieving original messages (removing all read messages from the server). With the former, you will have to periodically go onto the GroupWise web based email to remove messages even after you removed them in Mail.
- Messages will be stored on your hard drive.
- You will NOT have access to Cabinet folders on GroupWise server.
