Wireless Network Locations

Student Wireless

GVSU has established 100% network connectivity on the Allendale, Meijer, Muskegon, and Pew campuses by providing at least one hard-wired network connection in every classroom and office,.

Keeping in step with the cutting edge of technology, the GVSU Wireless Network makes it possible for students and faculty/staff to hop online from their personal computers from any academic building on the Allendale campus and the Grand Rapids campus. If you would rather get online while in the dining areas, no problem. Grand Valley's dining areas are all wireless. Need to access online information while in Zumberge Library? It's available, without wires!

Wireless Configuration:
Information Technology offers encrypted wifi Internet access.

  • The name of the wireless network SSID for encrypted faculty/staff only access is SGVSU  [Call the helpdesk at 616 331-2101 for the pass phrase]
  • If your computer does not support encrypted wireless access, you may use GVSU as the new SSID.  No pass phrase required.
  • The encrypted access is preferred.

Students will NOT be able to log to the SGVSU or GVSU SSID's. Click for Student only wireless network information

These SSIDs will appear automatically for many users. You may need to select it in your wireless network configuration. If you do not see SGVSU or GVSU you may need to add the wireless network in. Follow these steps:

  1. Double click on your wireless symbol on your desk top.  If you do not see a wireless symbol you may need to go to Preferences on a Mac  or the control panel on Windows.
  2. The language will vary depending on your wireless window but find the phrase that indicates 'set up a wireless network' or 'Open new'
  3. Type in SGVSU
  4. Type in the pass phrase.

If you have a Wireless Cards that is not registered you will receive the BlueSocket login.  Use your network login and password to access the internet. By registering your card, you will bypass the BlueSocket login.

To register your wireless card, click on the link below: (Faculty/Staff Only)

Student wireless cards no longer need to be registered!

GVSU Network Wireless Standards
Any wireless card that supports 802.11b or 802.11g standards will work on the GVSU wireless network.

WIRELESS SECURITY ISSUES

Wireless networks do have the added risk that it is technically possible for someone to eavesdrop on the information you send over the network. While it is technically possible to listen in on wireless network traffic, it is technically harder to make any meaningful sense out of it. Eavesdropping on network communication (wireless or wired) is illegal and a violation of Information Technology Policies and Student Code. All violations will result in disciplinary action with the appropriate authority. As with any sensitive data (wireless or wired), take precautionary measures prior to transferring this type of data.

When using wireless technology on campus be sure that all passwords and personal information is only sent to secure web sites. Secure web sites are ones that use SSL encryption, look for the gold lock in the lower right corner of the web browser to confirm if a web site uses SSL.
