Hints for the Home Team

*Encourage students to ask questions and solve problems.

*Ask students what they think they should do.

*Send positive messages about your pride in their efforts.

*Encourage taking risks that create positive results.

*Share that healthy behavior is a result of practice.

*Role model an adult relationship with your student.

*Encourage developing new friendships at GVSU.

*Always suggest consulting with a staff person for advice.

*Ask follow-up questions when concerned about behavior.

*Help your student understand that the Family Educational Rights to Privacy Act (FERPA) does not allow you access to their educational files or to handle situation for them.

*Suggest talking with roommates about problems (in person) as it relates to sharing space.

*Love them regardless of the results.

*Encourage your student to get involved in campus events - Laker Late Night, Student Organizations, sporting and cultural events.

*Encourage them to find a great place they feel comfortable studying (which may be outside of their living center room). 

*Encourage them to work toward balance...get an appropriate amount of sleep, exercise, relaxation time, good diet.
