Hauenstein Center Scholars in Residence

Each year, the Hauenstein Center invites at least one presidential historian or political scientist to Grand Valley to present his or her "course" on the American presidency.  Below is your opportunity to enter the classrooms of renowned presidential historians H. W. Brands and Richard Norton Smith.



H. W. Brands (ENTER CLASSROOM), professor of history at the University of Texas, visited the Hauenstein Center as a scholar in residence in March 2008.  He is author of two dozen books, including biographies of Benjamin Franklin (2000), Andrew Jackson (2005), Theodore Roosevelt (2007), Woodrow Wilson (2003), and Franklin Roosevelt (forthcoming).

Richard Norton Smith (
ENTER CLASSROOM), scholar in residence at George Mason University, presented two series of lectures at the Hauenstein Center -- one in November 2006 and the other in October 2007.  He is author  of Patriarch: George Washington and the New American Nation (1993), and he has served as director of five presidential libraries, including the Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois; Hoover in West Branch, Iowa; Eisenhower in Abilene, Kansas; Reagan in Simi Valley, California, and Ford in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
