Honoring Washington, Lincoln, and U.S. Presidents
Each year, on the third Monday of February, the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies hosts Grand Valley State University's celebration of Presidents' Day.
Officially designated as Washington's Birthday, Presidents' Day was first observed in 1880 to celebrate the birth of the "Father of our Country." By the 1960s, however, the holiday commonly became a celebration of our two most revered presidents -- Washington and Lincoln -- and today it calls to mind the service of all U.S. presidents... and discounted furniture.
