President Haas reads to preschoolers about overcoming differences

About 40 preschool students sat on the floor with President Thomas J. Haas to hear all about best friends Lily and Salma. Lily and Salma like all the same things, until they come to school with different sandwiches.
Haas read the book, The Sandwich Swap by Queen Rania of Jordan, to 3- and 4-year-old students at Explore and Learn Academy in Grand Rapids November 8.
The class is part of the Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative, which brings in community readers each month. The theme for November is Focus on the Fathers; President Haas and his wife, Marcia, have three children and four granddaughters.
Eva Martinez, community engagement manager for ELNC, said it is important for families to understand that an early education is a pipeline to college.
President Haas chaired Michigan’s 21st Century Education Commission, created by Gov. Rick Snyder. In March, the commission released a report of recommended solutions for improving educational opportunities for all students, which included universal access to preschool education.
