GVSU Graduate Plans Memorial for Son at Area Restaurant

November 11, 2009

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Michele Sobczak-Obetts, who graduated from Grand Valley State University in 1988, is planning a memorial service in honor of her son, who was killed when the SUV he was riding in crashed in October.

Jeremy Sobczak-Obetts was killed on October 17 when the driver of the SUV he was riding in crashed into a wooded area near Ada. Police said alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Sobczak-Obetts is hosting a memorial in honor of Jeremy on November 13 at the Outback Steakhouse, 3475 Alpine NW in Grand Rapids. The family is inviting the public at 8 p.m. to toast Jeremy’s memory with a glass of milk. Jeremy would have turned 24 on November 19.

“Milk was Jeremy’s absolute favorite drink,” Sobczak-Obetts said. “He would drink gallons of it a day. Outback was his favorite restaurant.” They family hopes the toast will serve as a fitting memorial for Jeremy and will help to raise awareness of the perils of drunken driving.
